Sheet-metal roofing work covers everything that handles water where a covering cannot: valleys, chimney and wall abutments, dormers, penetrations, snow retention, and the whole rainwater path from eaves to drain. It is a separate craft, and it is where most roof leaks actually begin. Tiles shed water. Sheet-metal work is included in every RoofPruf replacement package. As standalone work it is priced per linear metre by material and profile, quoted from the survey.
Gutter and downpipe sizing follows the catchment area and the design rainfall intensity for the location, not the size that was there before. Undersized rainwater goods overflow at exactly the moment they are needed and soak the wall head below them for years before anyone connects the two.
In alpine and pre-alpine locations, a sheet of snow releasing off a smooth covering onto an entrance, a car or a person is a foreseeable event. Snow guards are sized from the local snow load and the covering friction, positioned by calculation, and fixed into the structure rather than into the batten. System suppliers publish this data; we use it.
Titanium zinc, aluminium, copper and coated steel differ in service life, in cost, in how they weather and in what they may be paired with. Copper runoff onto an aluminium element will destroy it. We specify the whole rainwater system as one compatible set rather than matching whatever is cheapest per metre.
